Waterdragons Progress Report Autumn 2020

We* have had really nice term with the Waterdragons who have all worked very hard to come back from a long break out of the water. We spent the first half term on getting all the basic skills back (floating, streamlining, push and glides, sculling, roly polies) and working on the main components of frontcrawl, backstroke and breaststroke. The second half term we have continued to keep up the skills level and have also worked much more on butterfly and started to dive again.

We did timed 50m swims with them on 24 Nov  – frontcrawl and breaststroke. All swimmers started in the water for both swims and we observed their strokes, turns/ push offs and finishes to assess if these would have been โ€˜legalโ€™ swims in a gala (that means they would have not been disqualified for any technical infringements).

We did another round of 50m timed swims on 15 Dec repeating the frontcrawl and breaststroke and adding in the backstroke as well. The children were asked to start with a dive on the frontcrawl race, the breaststroke was started in the water again. The emphasis was once again on getting the stroke technique right and the starts, turns and finishes to a gala standard. Some swimmers recorded slower times than the first time. That is of no concern whatsoever as we had asked all the children to concentrate on their strokes and skills rather than trying to beat others or their own time. At this stage it is really important that we get the swimmers to swim with technically correct strokes rather than work on speed. That will come later in the higher squads.

We are extremely happy with the progress of all of the children, they have been a delight to work with and have been so resilient and adaptable to these new procedures and processes. All of them have a smile on their face in training and that is the most important thing for us. All children have been polite, well behaved, paying attention while also massively improving their swimming over the course of this term. Well done all, Da iawn ti ๐Ÿ™‚

We will be handing out small slips to the swimmers with their times and comments about  the races on Thursday 17 Dec. If you have questions about any of those or indeed any other issues you would like to raise, please get in touch with Friederike.

I would like to give a special mention to our young coach K who started to help with the coaching on Tuesdays and has been a delight to work with but also been giving invaluable feedback and coaching to our Waterdragons, thank you very much.

We are still short of coaches and are looking for more parents to come forward to help on poolside. We will have 2 coaches retiring in 2021 and would like to pass on as much experience, knowledge and wisdom as we can before we go. Please get in touch if you can help, the club entirely relies on parents to come forward and help.

Leisure Centre closure Dec 20 / Jan 21

Dear all swimming families, as you would have heard in the news by now and perhaps also seen the email that Clare sent, you are probably aware of Leisure Centres having to close again after 24 Dec. That means we can finish this term’s training on 22 Dec as planned but it also means we will have to halt training after that until further notice once again. We will update you with news and updates on this as soon as we hear from Pembrokeshire Leisure and Swim Wales. The swimmers have bounced back in 2020 and I am sure they will bounce back again, we will stay positive and focus on getting back. SWIMATHON 2020 50% OFF

Next years Swimathon session for Fishguard Flyers will take place on Friday 27th March 7pm-10pm. Fishguard Flyers are proud to have supported Swimathon since many many years and the children have always thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and the accomplishment! Swimming long distances without break is different to what we normally practise in training and more often than not the children actually love it.

We would like all our members to participate – there is a choice of 400m, 1500m, 2500m and 5000m individual distances or 1500m and 5000m as (2 to 5 people) Team Challenge.

We would recommend the 400m individual distance or 1500m team challenge (team of 3, 500m each or team of 2, 750m each) to our swimmers in the Waterdragon squad.

We would recommend the 1500m individual distance to most of our Nemo and Porpoise swimmers (or team of 3,4 or 5 for 5000m team challenge)

We would recommend the 2500m individual distance for Dolphin and  Deveoment swimmers. (or team of 2 for 5000m team)

We would recommend the 5000m individuals to only our Deveoment, Youth and Master swimmers.

There is currently 50% off the entry fee if you enter before the 24th November.

Please use the details below for registration:

Club Championships 2019

All Fishguard Flyers swimmers are invited to swim at our annual Club Championships on Sunday July 7th 1-4pm (12.30 warm up)   We have changed the event format slightly for this year and also the entry process. All swimmers are entered automatically for all races in their age category and are strongly encouraged to take up all their races. Each race will earn them points which will go towards their team score.   Each swimmer who participates will be presented with a medal at the end of the gala and we also will be giving out a surprise anniversary gift this year to all members.   We would appreciate replies from all families by Friday June 21st to indicate if your child will be competing or not. Please be prompt with your replies as the chasing up takes a lot of precious volunteer time that we would rather spend on poolside with the children.    Please reply to Friederike frieschmi@gmx.de. Please also email Friederike with any questions you have. Please do not reply to this email.   Format:   Swimmers aged 10/u (age as of August 31st 2019) and older Waterdragons:    4 races: 25m bc Kick (or butterfly by coaches discretion), 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke, 25m frontcrawl. An optional 5th race of 100IM if children are able and coaches happy for them to perform this.   Swimmers aged 11+:    5 races: 50m butterfly (or 25m by coaches discretion), 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m frontcrawl, 100IM   Each competitor will be part of a house team and score points with each of their swims for their house. There will be some bonus events where each house can collect additional points and also some relay races where double points will be given.    This years gala will end with the relay races, there will be no after party in the studio on that day. The results will be accumulated in the week after the gala and will be revealed at our Summer Fun day on July 20th when the club gala and our annual awards presentations will be made.   There are no entry fees to be paid for the gala and entry to the spectator gallery will be free also. We will be holding a raffle on the gala day though, so please be generous and bring some raffle prizes along.   Looking forward to seeing everyone at the gala.   Your Fishguard Flyers Team

Mascot Competition 20th Anniversary

Hi all members, swimmers, parents, siblings and friends. Here is something to do during the holidays!!

Fishguard Flyers is 20 years old this year. To celebrate we would like to launch a mascot which will accompany children at galas and make home visits. We are running a ‘Design a Mascot’ competition – get creating, the best idea for an Mascot will be turned into the real thing.

Please download and print the template. Get drawing and bring it back to Leisure Centre. Once we have received a good amount of entries, we will get judging. Thanks to the swimmers who have already submitted their designs.

Good luck ๐Ÿ™‚
